Military Families

St. Paul’s Episcopal Montessori School is a private school near the JBSA bases offering military scholarships and Child Care Aware!

As a neighbor to Fort Sam Houston, St. Paul’s Episcopal Montessori School has a longtime relationship with military families! We offer tuition assistance through the Rev. Chester W. King Scholarship Fund, which is specifically designated for active duty and veteran families, and we accept tuition payments from ChildCare Aware of America.

St. Paul’s is located directly across from Fort Sam Houston, with easy access to our school campus from the Fort Sam Houston main gate on New Braunfels Ave. Our central location also provides easy access to BAMC (Brook Army Medical Center), and is an easy, direct route to both Randolph Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base.

Children in military families benefit tremendously from access to an authentic Montessori education, as families can find a Montessori school in almost any city around the world! As military families are moving from place to place, keeping children in a Montessori environment can provide tremendous consistency and continuity in their education. St. Paul’s is committed to welcoming children throughout the year as they move to San Antonio, and ensuring that they are made to feel at home as soon as they become a part of our community!

“My first experience with Montessori education was at St. Paul’s in 2020 and I could not have asked for a better school for my three children. As a pediatrician, I place a very high value on the unique needs of children and in modeling their education around their natural growth and development, which was so clearly evident in the Montessori curriculum. I was also an active duty military member, and no stranger to the inherent challenges in military careers that center on frequent moves and inherent instability in the continuity in education for children. Kids can often feel lost and overwhelmed when they move from city to city and school to school. When I found St. Paul’s, I knew immediately that I had found an ideal model for their learning as well as the stability I was seeking in building a small, supportive educational community for my kids. They had incredibly flexible hours to help support the sometimes unpredictable nature of the military, and truly became like a second family for us. The guides knew my children as well as I did (better in some ways!) and provided such a comforting daily routine that really helped them to thrive. After our 4 years at St. Paul’s, we moved to Las Vegas and easily found another small Montessori community where the kids have continued to thrive, in part because in the midst of moving turbulence, they were able to find continuity and comfort in their Montessori education.”

“My husband has been in the military for just shy of 20 years including 8 moves. While moving is never easy, in fact quite challenging at times, enrolling our children in Montessori schools through fifth or sixth grade offered consistency and a great deal of comfort each time we moved. It was always sad to leave teachers and friends behind, but entering school the next year with a classroom that physically felt familiar with sandpaper letters, bead bars, the stamp game etc. offered contentment and security. Most importantly though, our children could pick up where they left off in their learning. They were taught addition or multiplication or reading in the same way and with the same materials that they had been taught at the previous school. They didn’t have to worry about covering a topic in one school, moving to a new state, and covering that same topic again. They also didn’t have to worry about being behind other students in math or reading. The Montessori environment, designed to meet the needs of each individual learner, was perfect for our military family. Two of our three children have aged out of the Montessori environment and now attend public middle school and high school. They are both in honors courses and are performing very well. Despite all of our military moves, a Montessori education taught them how to learn and most importantly helped them find joy in learning new things. We love Montessori! It has always been a good fit for our military family.”
