Summer is Coming

It’s only April and temperatures are already on the rise, which means summer is coming! Have you decided how your family will be spending the hot summer months?

From traveling to nature hikes to camps on every subject imaginable, there is no shortage of ways to spend the long days between when school lets out and when it starts again in the fall. While planning your family activities, it’s easy to get overwhelmed or to assume there’s no way to incorporate Montessori into your summer plans. No matter what you do, though, there are a number of ways to continue using the Montessori method at home or on the road.

  1. Yard Work – spending time outside and learning practical life skills are both tenets of Montessori. While working in the yard, children can help by collecting and counting sticks, watering plants, building “fairy houses” from natural materials, and exploring the natural world
  2. Travel Games – traveling by car or plane can be daunting, but there are ways to make it more fun. Trying reciting rhymes, practicing reading or tracing, or learning how to use a paper map to plan a route or measure how far you’ve traveled.
  3. Household Chores – practical life skills comprise a whole section of the Toddler and Primary classrooms. Children can continue practicing these skills at home by helping to fold laundry, wash dishes, or cook a meal.
  4. Explore Locally – there is a whole world right here in San Antonio! Cool off in a museum, see a kid-friendly show at Magik Theatre, or visit one of our many beautiful parks.
  5. Stay in School – did you know that St. Paul’s offers a Summer Program? Your child can keep learning in a familiar environment, while still enjoying summer play. Spots are limited, so sign up soon!

Whatever you decide to do this summer, enjoy spending time with your family and seeing everything that your child has learned this year. For more information about signing up for our Summer Program, click here or email school@stpaulsmontessori.org
