Creating Care in the Classroom

This month in Primary 2, we are learning about the importance of caring for our world. We are sharing what we know and are learning about other ways to help keep it clean and beautiful. The children have learned how to help keep our indoor environment clean and beautiful. Even though it’s a continual learning process, they have grasped the concepts and are doing very well.

All year, the children have enjoyed sweeping our outdoor areas and helping to keep our plants watered. We have now added recycling and composting, and the children are eager to participate and contribute. They volunteer weekly to gather composting and recycling items and take them to the appropriate bins on our campus. We are learning which things go in each bin and why.

The children are learning about reusing and recycling through the classroom.

Here several of the children have created art by using items that might otherwise have gone in the trash. They are able to be creative and think outside the box. It’s amazing to see how inventive they can be. They are able to give their imaginations free reign.

We have learned the symbol for recycling and use it in our Math area.

This photo shows a student learning 1-to-1 correspondence, using recycling symbols to reinforce his ability in counting from 1 to 10.

This student is working on a recycling truck puzzle.

We also have books in the library that tell us how important it is we all take on the responsibility of caring for our world.

Maria Montessori said, “The land is where our roots are. The child must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.” We continue to help our children to do just that.
